About the Book

Rilla of Ingleside 1920

First published in 1920 by McClelland and Stewart

Rilla of Ingleside features Anne’s youngest daughter, Rilla, during the First World War. A careless and spoiled young girl when the story begins, she develops into a strong, responsible young woman during the four years where her world is shaken by the war. As her brothers and childhood friends depart to fight on the Western Front, Rilla organizes a junior Red Cross, takes care of an orphaned baby, falls in love and waits for news of her loved ones.

Rilla of Ingleside is historically significant in its documentation of “life on the homefront” during the First World War. It is one of few fictional works describing the role of Canadian women in the First World War.

Rilla of Ingleside is the eighth book in the series of Anne novels and short stories.
