About the Book

Emily Climbs 1925

First published in 1925 by McClelland and Stewart.

“Strive–strive–keep on–words are your medium– make them your slaves–until they will say for you what you want them to say.’ That is true–and I do try–but it seems to me there is something BEYOND words–any words–all words–something that always escapes you when you try to grasp it–and yet leaves something in your hand which you wouldn’t have had if you hadn’t reached for it.” - Emily Climbs ch.1

Emily Climbs traces Emily’s development as a writer. Her journal entries, narratring her own and other’s stories, her inspirations, achievements, failures and self-critiques, form a large portion of the book. A wise, humourous narrator pretending to be Emily’s biographer punctuates the events of the story. The novel is a realistic, at times comic, at times sensitive documentation of teenage rebellion and whispers of romance.
